Paleo Diet A Caveman Diet For Today

Have you heard of the paleo diet? It sounds like a gimmick, but many people have had good results with it. Also called the Caveman or Stone Age diet, this is simply a diet that tries to recreate the paleolithic way of eating. This was over 10,000 years ago, before the Agricultural Revolution.

 

The paleo diet is actually a rather extreme type of high protein, low carb diet. Even more than other high protein diets, like Atkins, the paleo diet removes grains like corn and wheat from your choices. This can be difficult to adjust to for many people, as so many mainstream foods, like bread, pasta and rice fall into this category.

 

With the paleo diet you can eat meat, fruits, nuts and vegetables. Meat should really be all natural, preferably organic and grass fed. If you eat factory farmed meat, you are really cheating, as this is corn fed, so you are getting grains. The fact is, mainstream corn and other grains are likely to be genetically modified and factory farmed animals are injected with hormones and antibiotics. The possible health risks of these practices are still being debated, but it’s hardly a natural diet that cavemen would have eaten! So try to stick to organic animal products if you try this diet.

 

The paleo diet is also fairly consistent with the diet advocated by Weston Price, who studied the health of people who live close to their ancestors from pre-agricultural ancient civilizations. There are fewer and fewer people who are able to live this way now, but in some parts of the world, such as parts of Central Asia and the Himalayas there are healthy, long lived people who violate many of the conventional rules of nutrition, such as the idea that fat or animal products are bad for you.

 

The paleo or caveman diet is not for everyone, but it is something you may want to try, especially if more conventional weight loss systems have not worked for you.
